Belfair State Park includes over 3,000 feet of freshwater shoreline on Big Mission and Little Mission Creeks, and over 1,300 feet of saltwater shoreline on the canal. Picnicking, beachcombing, camping, scuba diving, crabbing and rock collecting are popular activities here.
History
This area was once a meeting place for countless generations of Indians, as evidenced by the numerous arrowheads found during the park's construction. The state first http://scuba.diver2007.googlepages.com/home acquired this tract in 1949; it was named after the nearby community of Belfair. The town was originally named "Clifton," but the post office asked that it be changed due to the great number of Cliftons living there. The Postmistress, Mrs. Murray, chose the name "Belfair" from St. Alamo, a book she was reading at the time.
Flora & Fauna
This park is typical of a seashore area. Native Douglas fir, red cedar, madrone and alders form the upper story of the ground cover, while ferns, wild berries and sea http://scuba.diver2007.googlepages.com/home grasses cover the forest floor. Wildlife here includes squirrels, seagulls, ducks geese, woodpeckers and a variety of other birds. Belfair State Park is close to other attractions as well, including Bremerton, home of the Naval Shipyard, and the Itsap Peninsula. The numerous small communities on the peninsula host festivals and special events throughout the summer.
Facilities: 194 campsites, 47 of which have full hookup capabilities; tables and stoves are located at each site.
