Government Loaders in the Maldives made quite a splash on October 17. President Mohamed Nasheed and his cabinet met on the floor of an Indian Ocean lagoon, 20 feet below the surface. They traded business suits for scuba gear for the 30-minute meeting and communicated with hand signals and whiteboards. The unusual underwater gathering was meant to draw attention to rising sea levels, one of the greatest threats from climate change. The Maldives is a group of 1,190 coral islands. It is the lowest-lying nation on Earth--its highest elevation is only about 8 feet above sea level. Scientists predict that rising sea levels could submerge the country by the end of the century.
