Sponge bath.(HEALTH)( bacteria on dirty sponges)

This graph shows the percent of bacteria that were killed when sponges were microwaved or run through a dishwasher after being soaked for 48 hours at room temperature in a solution made from a ground-beef and lab-growth medium to attain a high level of microbes [20 million per sponge]. Researchers from the USDA Agricultural Research Service [Beltsville, Maryland] also tested other methods of killing the bacteria on dirty sponges; a soak in a 10% bleach solution, in lemon juice or in deionized water killed only 37%-87% of the bacteria. Halt the risk of food poisoning due to cross-contamination in your kitchen by either micro-waving or washing your sponges in a dishwasher weekly.[USDA.GOV]
